Construction and trades occupations you can sponsor in Australia, and the ones you cannot

Builders and trade contractors ask the question by the role on the site: can I sponsor my carpenter, my concreter, my scaffolder, my best labourer? The answer depends on the occupation code. Qualified trades are on the Core Skills list, nearly all of them, including painters, plasterers and tilers that some older lists seemed to leave out; labouring, scaffolding, rigging, concreting, steel fixing and plant operation are on no list, with the regional DAMAs and the onshore visa pool as the lawful routes; and gardeners are a trap, listed for state visas but not the 482. The table below gives the position for each role, then what to do for the ones that cannot be sponsored, and the upskilling path that turns an experienced labourer into a nominable tradesperson.

Checked against the Department of Home Affairs occupation lists and price list, 1 July 2026 settings. Updated 29 October 2026.

List positions change with each instrument; verify the occupation on the Department’s current Core Skills list before you advertise. Trades on the list carry the A$79,423 salary floor (or the market rate if higher) and, for the passports the mandatory skills-assessment instrument names (Brazil, China, Fiji, Hong Kong, India, Macau, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, South Africa, Thailand, Vietnam and Zimbabwe, by occupation), a Trades Recognition Australia assessment before the nomination; the hiring sequence is on how to hire tradespeople.

The roles you cannot sponsor: who can work for you now

The site does not have to wait for a visa. Three groups can work for you today without sponsorship, and construction already runs on them:

  • Working holiday makers (417 and 462): any role for six months per employer, with the limit lifted for construction in northern Australia, and regional construction work counts toward their second-year visa, which is why British and Irish tradespeople and labourers are on regional sites in numbers. Employing working holiday makers.
  • International students in trade and building courses: 48 hours a fortnight in term, unlimited in breaks. Employing international students.
  • Partner, graduate (485) and bridging visa holders: full work rights, a VEVO check and a White Card. Who can work for you now.

SponsorTalent lists construction and trades candidates by visa and city, so you can see who can start on Monday before you make contact; search is free and a contact unlocks for A$30.

The DAMA exception

Designated Area Migration Agreements are the exception to the lists, and for construction they are a real one. The Kimberley agreement’s occupation list (October 2025 version) includes Builder’s Labourer, Forklift Driver, Excavator Operator and Earthmoving Plant Operator with salary and English concessions; the Northern Territory agreement, renewed in March 2025 to 2030, carries a civil construction site supervisor role and a long trades list; other regional agreements in Queensland, South Australia, Victoria, Western Australia and New South Wales carry some of the same. The business must be in the region, endorsed by the regional body, and the worker must meet the agreement’s concessions. Individual businesses have also negotiated company-specific labour agreements for roles the lists omit, including scaffolding and concreting firms, though that route is slow and needs a demonstrated case. Which agreement covers your area: sponsor workers in your state; how DAMAs compare with the other routes: PALM, labour agreement or DAMA.

Turning a labourer into a tradesperson

The upskilling path that does work. Many “labourers” have been framing, formworking, tiling or rendering for years without the ticket. An experienced worker already in Australia can have that experience assessed against the Certificate III through recognition of prior learning at a registered training organisation, then obtain a Trades Recognition Australia assessment and become a listed tradesperson you can nominate. It takes months, not weeks, and it only works where the experience is real and documented; WIDEN assesses whether it is realistic before anyone pays for it: recognition of prior learning for trades, and for licensed trades, the licence after the assessment.

The mistake to avoid

Do not nominate the role under a trade it is not. A labourer nominated as a Carpenter, a concreter as a Bricklayer or a leading hand as a Construction Project Manager is tested against the duties, the qualification, the award classification and the pay, and a mismatch is refused, can bar the business from sponsoring for years, and exposes the worker to cancellation. If the person genuinely does the listed trade, nominate that trade and pay its rate; if they do not, use the routes above.

Frequently asked questions

Which construction trades can be sponsored on a 482 visa? Carpenters, joiners, electricians, plumbers, gasfitters, roof plumbers, bricklayers, stonemasons, painters, plasterers, renderers, wall and floor tilers, roof tilers, floor finishers, glaziers, welders, fabricators, fitters, sheetmetal workers, refrigeration mechanics, diesel and motor mechanics, landscape gardeners, arborists, construction project managers and building associates are on the Core Skills list. Cabinetmakers and general gardeners are not.

Can I sponsor a labourer, scaffolder, concreter or forklift driver? Not on any national visa: those roles are on no skilled list. The Kimberley DAMA lists builder’s labourers, forklift drivers, excavator and earthmoving operators, and other regional agreements carry some of the same; company-specific labour agreements have been negotiated by scaffolding and concreting firms. Otherwise the pool is visa holders already in Australia.

Can I sponsor a painter or plasterer? Yes. The Core Skills list carries Painter (332211), Plasterer (Wall and Ceiling) (333211) and Renderer (Solid Plaster) (333212) under their 2022 titles, so the 482 and 186 are available even though older lists showing “Painting Trades Worker” and “Solid Plasterer” suggest otherwise.

Does a sponsored tradesperson need a skills assessment? For the 482, only where the Department’s instrument lists the occupation for the applicant’s passport (several trades for Brazil, China, Fiji, Hong Kong, India, Macau, PNG, the Philippines, South Africa, Thailand, Vietnam and Zimbabwe), in which case a Trades Recognition Australia assessment must precede the nomination. For the 186 Direct Entry, always. Licensed trades need the state licence after arrival regardless.

Can an experienced labourer become sponsorable? Yes, by having real, documented trade experience recognised against the Certificate III through recognition of prior learning, then a Trades Recognition Australia assessment, after which the worker is a listed tradesperson. It takes months and only works where the experience is genuine.
