Can I sponsor a gardener or landscaper in Australia? Landscaper yes, gardener no

It depends on which one. Landscape Gardener (362711) and Arborist (362511) are on the Core Skills Occupation List, so a landscaping or tree business can sponsor a qualified landscaper or arborist on the 482, 186 or 494. Gardener (General) (362211) is on the Short-term list only, which opens the regional 494 and state nomination but not the 482 or 186, and garden maintenance, lawn-mowing and grounds staff without a horticulture qualification are not nominable at all. The Department reads the duties, not the job title: a “landscaper” who mows and weeds is a gardener, and a nomination built on the wrong code is refused.

Checked against the Department of Home Affairs occupation lists and price list, 1 July 2026 settings. Updated 29 October 2026.

The nomination is tested against the duties and the qualification. A landscaping business that nominates its maintenance crew leader as a Landscape Gardener needs that person to be constructing landscapes, with the qualification or equivalent experience, at a salary of at least A$79,423 or the market rate.

The gardener who cannot be sponsored on the 482

For a qualified gardener in a regional area (everywhere outside Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane), the 494 is open: VETASSESS assessment, labour market testing, Regional Certifying Body advice, and permanent residence through the 191 after three years. A gardener already in Australia can pursue state nomination with your job offer. The Kimberley DAMA lists Gardener (General) with concessions and other regional agreements may; Designated Area Migration Agreements are the exception to the lists, and for construction they are a real one. The Kimberley agreement’s occupation list (October 2025 version) includes Builder’s Labourer, Forklift Driver, Excavator Operator and Earthmoving Plant Operator with salary and English concessions; the Northern Territory agreement, renewed in March 2025 to 2030, carries a civil construction site supervisor role and a long trades list; other regional agreements in Queensland, South Australia, Victoria, Western Australia and New South Wales carry some of the same. The business must be in the region, endorsed by the regional body, and the worker must meet the agreement’s concessions. Individual businesses have also negotiated company-specific labour agreements for roles the lists omit, including scaffolding and concreting firms, though that route is slow and needs a demonstrated case. Which agreement covers your area: sponsor workers in your state; how DAMAs compare with the other routes: PALM, labour agreement or DAMA.

Who can work your crews now

The site does not have to wait for a visa. Three groups can work for you today without sponsorship, and construction already runs on them:

  • Working holiday makers (417 and 462): any role for six months per employer, with the limit lifted for construction in northern Australia, and regional construction work counts toward their second-year visa, which is why British and Irish tradespeople and labourers are on regional sites in numbers. Employing working holiday makers.
  • International students in trade and building courses: 48 hours a fortnight in term, unlimited in breaks. Employing international students.
  • Partner, graduate (485) and bridging visa holders: full work rights, a VEVO check and a White Card. Who can work for you now.

SponsorTalent lists construction and trades candidates by visa and city, so you can see who can start on Monday before you make contact; search is free and a contact unlocks for A$30.

Garden maintenance and landscaping crews are a working-holiday staple, and regional landscaping counts as plant cultivation toward the second-year visa in many settings; students in horticulture courses are the next group, and the ones who finish the Certificate III become the landscapers you can later sponsor.

The experienced hand without the ticket

The upskilling path that does work. Many “labourers” have been building retaining walls, paving and planting to design for years without the ticket. An experienced worker already in Australia can have that experience assessed against the Certificate III through recognition of prior learning at a registered training organisation, then obtain a Trades Recognition Australia assessment and become a listed tradesperson you can nominate. It takes months, not weeks, and it only works where the experience is real and documented; WIDEN assesses whether it is realistic before anyone pays for it: recognition of prior learning for trades, and for licensed trades, the licence after the assessment.

Do not nominate the role under a trade it is not. A labourer nominated as a Carpenter, a concreter as a Bricklayer or a leading hand as a Construction Project Manager is tested against the duties, the qualification, the award classification and the pay, and a mismatch is refused, can bar the business from sponsoring for years, and exposes the worker to cancellation. If the person genuinely does the listed trade, nominate that trade and pay its rate; if they do not, use the routes above.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sponsor a landscaper on a 482 visa? Yes. Landscape Gardener (362711) is on the Core Skills list, so the 482, 186 and 494 are available for a qualified landscaper who constructs landscapes, at a salary of at least A$79,423 or the market rate.

Can I sponsor a gardener? Not on the 482 or 186: Gardener (General) is on the Short-term list only. A qualified gardener can be sponsored on the regional 494 or pursue state nomination; grounds and lawn-mowing staff without the qualification cannot be sponsored on the standard visas.

Can I sponsor an arborist? Yes. Arborist (362511) is on the Core Skills list for the 482, 186 and 494.

What is the difference between a gardener and a landscape gardener for visa purposes? A landscape gardener plans and constructs landscapes (site preparation, hard landscaping, planting to a design); a gardener plants, maintains and tends gardens. The Department reads the duties and the qualification, not the job title.
