How to sponsor a truck driver in Australia: the DAMA route, step by step

You cannot sponsor a truck driver on a standard 482, 494 or 186. Truck Driver (General), ANZSCO 733111, and every other road-transport driving occupation are absent from the Core Skills and regional lists, however severe the shortage of MC drivers. Transport employers who do sponsor drivers use a Designated Area Migration Agreement: endorsement by the region’s Designated Area Representative, a labour agreement with the Department of Home Affairs, then nominations on the 482 labour-agreement stream, with concessions on age, English and salary. The alternative is a company-specific labour agreement, which large fleets negotiate directly. Either way, plan on six to twelve months for the first driver, and quicker for each one after.

Checked against the Department of Home Affairs occupation lists and price list, 1 July 2026 settings. Updated 29 October 2026.

Why the standard program is closed to drivers

The skilled occupation lists are built from ANZSCO skill levels 1 to 3. Truck drivers sit at level 4 and are excluded as a structural matter, not a policy choice about transport. A nomination for 733111 on a standard 482 is refused on the occupation alone, and nominating a driver under a different title (logistics manager, fleet supervisor) that does not match the duties is refused as not genuine and can bar the business from sponsoring. The honest position is explained to candidates on our truck driver sponsorship page, which is also the most-visited page on this site: the candidate supply is large.

The DAMA route, step by step

  1. Confirm your region has a DAMA that lists driving occupations. Twelve agreements are active: the Northern Territory, Far North Queensland, Townsville and North Queensland, Orana (Dubbo), Goulburn Valley (Shepparton), the Great South Coast (Warrnambool), Adelaide city (technology) and regional South Australia, the Pilbara, the Goldfields, South West WA and the East Kimberley. Each publishes its own occupation list; most list Truck Driver (General) and several list other heavy-vehicle roles, but confirm with the Designated Area Representative rather than assume. Region details and representatives.
  2. Apply for endorsement from the region’s Designated Area Representative: evidence the business operates in the region, has tried to recruit locally (labour market testing applies), pays award rates and conditions, and has a genuine ongoing need. Endorsement fees and timelines vary by region.
  3. Request a labour agreement with the Department of Home Affairs through the DAMA’s template. This replaces Standard Business Sponsorship for the DAMA occupations and sets the concessions you may use. Allow several months for this stage; it is the slowest step the first time.
  4. Nominate each driver on the 482 labour-agreement stream (nomination charge A$330 plus the Skilling Australians Fund levy, A$1,200 per visa year for businesses under A$10m turnover), and the driver lodges the visa (A$4,015).
  5. The driver must live and work in the region for the life of the visa. Permanent residency is through the 186 labour-agreement stream where the DAMA deed provides it, typically after a qualifying period of sponsored work.

What the concessions change

Depending on the agreement and occupation: an age concession (commonly up to 50 or 55, against the standard 186 limit of 45), an English concession below the standard IELTS 5.0 settings, and a salary concession against the Core Skills Income Threshold of A$79,423 where the market rate for the role supports it. The salary concession is what makes driver nominations viable: a regional driver on award rates is well below the threshold, and the concession lets the nomination reflect the real wage. The concessions are negotiated per agreement and change at renewal; the Designated Area Representative confirms the current settings.

Licensing and the practical side

An overseas licence does not transfer to an Australian heavy-vehicle class. On arrival the driver converts to a state licence and must hold the Australian class the job needs (HR, HC or MC); the MC class requires time held on HC under the state’s graduated rules, so an offshore driver recruited for road-train or B-double work usually starts on HC work while they progress. Build that into the role and the salary. Experience evidence (licence history, employer references, fatigue-management training) matters more to DAMA endorsers than formal qualifications; some agreements and employers use a VETASSESS or equivalent assessment to document it.

The quicker route: drivers already in Australia

Working Holiday makers, 485 graduates and other onshore visa holders already driving on Australian licences are the fastest hires: no relocation and no licence conversion, and under a DAMA they can be nominated onshore. The six-month work limit on a Working Holiday visa still applies while you set the agreement up, so start early. What to check when an existing employee asks for sponsorship.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sponsor a truck driver on a 482 visa? Not on the standard 482 Core Skills or Specialist Skills streams: Truck Driver (733111) is not on any skilled occupation list. Drivers are sponsored on the 482 labour-agreement stream under a regional DAMA or a company labour agreement.

Which DAMA regions allow truck driver sponsorship? Most of the twelve active agreements list Truck Driver (General), including the Northern Territory, Orana, Goulburn Valley, Far North Queensland, Townsville, regional South Australia, the Pilbara, Goldfields, South West WA and East Kimberley, but each list changes at renewal. Confirm with the region’s Designated Area Representative before applying.

How long does it take to sponsor the first driver? Six to twelve months: endorsement by the region, then the labour agreement with the Department (the slowest step), then nomination and visa, which took a median of four months in September 2026. Later drivers skip the first two steps.

Can a driver get permanent residency through a DAMA? Yes where the agreement provides a 186 labour-agreement pathway, typically after a qualifying period of sponsored work in the region, with the age concession carried into the permanent stage in many agreements.

What about drivers already in Australia on a Working Holiday visa? They are the quickest hires, and they can be nominated onshore under your DAMA, but the six-month limit on work with one employer continues while the agreement is being set up, so start the endorsement early and consider a permission request before the six months runs out.
