Candidate context: visa sponsorship jobs from South Africa.
The TRA assessment: plan for it from day one
The Department’s instrument makes a skills assessment mandatory for 482 nominations where it lists the occupation for the applicant’s passport, and South African passports are listed for a number of trades. Trades Recognition Australia’s Migration Skills Assessment (A$795, typically within 120 days as at mid-2026) assesses a South African trade qualification (a trade test certificate under the national qualifications framework, apprenticeship records) together with employment evidence: references on letterhead with duties, payslips and tax records. Where the candidate learned on the job without a formal trade test, TRA’s pathways can assess substantial documented experience, but the file has to be built carefully. Have the candidate lodge in the week you decide to proceed; everything else on the Australian side can run in parallel.
The Australian side
- Confirm the occupation and the salary floor of A$79,423 (or the market rate if higher). Trades in mining and transport sit comfortably above it.
- Standard Business Sponsorship (A$420; median 11 days) and labour market testing (two ads of 28 days or more within four months of lodging on platforms with national reach). South African citizens are not covered by a trade-agreement exemption.
- English: IELTS 5.0 overall and in each component or equivalent for the 482; South African candidates educated in English usually test well above it, but a result is still required.
- Nomination (A$330 plus the levy of A$1,200 per visa year under A$10m turnover) lodged with the visa (A$4,015 for a 482). Core Skills visas took a median of four months in the Department’s September 2026 figures; roles at A$146,576 or more use the Specialist Skills stream (37 days), though trades are excluded from it.
- After arrival: state licensing for electricians, plumbers and refrigeration mechanics; site inductions and high-risk work licences arranged by the employer.
The South African side: nothing to clear
South Africa imposes no exit permit, contract attestation or recruitment-agency licensing on citizens taking work abroad. Practical items are the candidate’s own: a valid passport, police clearance from the South African Police Service (allow several weeks), and certified copies of trade and qualification documents for the assessment. Recruiters operating in South Africa sometimes offer "assessment packages"; the only assessment that counts is the one lodged with TRA or the relevant authority, and the candidate can lodge it directly.
Family, age and permanent residency
Most South African hires bring a partner and children on the same 482 application (additional charges apply per family member; partners have full work rights). The 482 has no age limit; the permanent 186 generally requires the worker to be under 45 at application, so experienced tradespeople over 40 should have the permanent route (186 after two years, or 494 to 191 in a regional area, or a DAMA age concession) planned at the start.

Frequently asked questions
Do South African tradespeople need a skills assessment for the 482? For the trades the Department’s instrument lists for South African passport holders, yes: a Trades Recognition Australia Migration Skills Assessment is mandatory before the visa can be granted. For other occupations it is optional for the 482 but required for the 186 Direct Entry, and most employers ask for one regardless.
Do South Africans need an English test? Yes. Only UK, Irish, US, Canadian and New Zealand passports are exempt. South African candidates need IELTS 5.0 overall and in each component (or equivalent) for the 482, and most pass comfortably.
Is there a South African exit process? No. South Africa imposes no exit permit, contract attestation or agency licensing on citizens taking work in Australia. The candidate arranges their own police clearance and document certification.
Can a South African electrician work straight away? Not unsupervised. After the visa, an electrician needs the state electrical licence, normally reached through TRA’s Offshore Technical Skills Record, a provisional licence and gap training. Plan a supervised period into the role. Non-licensed trades start with a White Card and site inductions.
How long does it take to sponsor someone from South Africa? Six to nine months for a first-time sponsor at the Department’s September 2026 medians, driven by the TRA assessment (up to 120 days) running alongside labour market testing and sponsorship approval, then nomination and visa (about four months). Existing sponsors with an assessed candidate are quicker.
