Who Australian employers hire from Nepal
- Aged and disability care: personal care and nursing support workers under the Aged Care Industry Labour Agreement, and registered nurses (aged care) on the standard 482.
- Hospitality: chefs and cooks (Certificate III or IV in Commercial Cookery is the most common Australian qualification among onshore Nepali candidates), hotel and motel managers.
- Transport: heavy-vehicle drivers, which requires a DAMA or labour agreement because driving occupations are not on the standard lists.
- Trades: carpenters, welders, electricians and motor mechanics, often with Australian trade qualifications completed onshore.
- Nursing and allied health: registered and enrolled nurses after Ahpra registration.
Candidate context: visa sponsorship jobs from Nepal.
Onshore first: why it is the easier hire
Most Nepali candidates on SponsorTalent are in Australia now. A 485 graduate has full work rights for two to three years and an Australian qualification the assessing authority already recognises; a student visa holder can work 48 hours a fortnight while studying and move to a 482 once qualified. The sponsorship for an onshore worker is the same three applications (sponsorship, nomination, visa) but with no travel, no labour approval and a candidate who can start the day the visa is in effect. The decision guide for existing employees applies directly: an employee has asked you to sponsor them.
The Australian side
- Confirm the occupation is on the Core Skills or regional list, or reachable through a labour agreement or DAMA, and that the salary meets A$79,423 and the market rate. Carer and driver roles are not on the lists; care runs on the aged care agreement, driving on DAMAs.
- Standard Business Sponsorship (A$420; median 11 days) and labour market testing (two ads of 28 days or more within four months of lodging on platforms with national reach).
- Nomination (A$330 plus the levy of A$1,200 per visa year under A$10m turnover) lodged with the visa (A$4,015 for a 482). Core Skills visas took a median of four months in the Department’s September 2026 figures.
The Nepal side: labour approval before departure
Under Nepal’s Foreign Employment Act, a Nepali citizen leaving for work abroad needs labour approval (shram swikriti) issued by the Department of Foreign Employment in Kathmandu, and the Department of Immigration checks for it at the airport; a worker who travels without it can be stopped. For a direct hire the worker applies for individual labour approval with the employment contract, the visa grant and the employer’s demand letter; recruitment through a Nepali agency uses the agency’s licence and a demand letter attested through the Nepali Embassy in Canberra. Rules, document attestation and which countries are open for approvals change (Nepal suspended and then reopened approvals for several destinations in 2026), so have the worker confirm the current requirements with the Department of Foreign Employment or the Embassy before booking travel. Nothing on the Nepal side is a fee you pay to Australia; it is the worker’s own exit permit.
Skills assessment and English for Nepali candidates
Trade and cookery occupations are assessed by Trades Recognition Australia; onshore graduates use TRA’s Job Ready Program, offshore candidates the Migration Skills Assessment on qualification plus documented employment. Care and management roles go to VETASSESS, nursing to ANMAC (plus Ahpra registration), IT to ACS. A skills assessment is mandatory for the 482 only where the Department’s instrument lists the occupation for Nepali passport holders, which it does for several trades; employers usually want one regardless. English: IELTS 5.0 overall and in each component (or equivalent) for the 482; higher for the 186 and for nursing registration (IELTS 7.0 each band or OET B). Nepali candidates educated in Australia often already hold a result.
What it costs and who pays
Yours and not recoverable: sponsorship approval A$420, nomination A$330, the Skilling Australians Fund levy (A$1,200 per visa year, A$1,800 at A$10m turnover or more), and migration agent fees for the sponsorship and nomination. The worker normally pays the 482 visa application charge (A$4,015), the skills assessment, English test, health examination and police clearance, and any Nepali labour-approval charges. It is a criminal offence for anyone, in Australia or Nepal, to ask for or receive a payment in return for the sponsorship itself; recruitment fees charged to Nepali workers are a known abuse and will be treated as such by both governments.

Frequently asked questions
Can I sponsor a Nepali worker who is in Australia on a student visa? Yes, once they hold the qualification the occupation requires and the role meets the A$79,423 salary floor. They remain limited to 48 hours a fortnight while studying until the 482 is in effect. Many employers sponsor at the 485 stage instead, when the candidate has full work rights and an Australian qualification.
Does a Nepali worker need anything from Nepal before coming? Yes. Labour approval from Nepal’s Department of Foreign Employment is required before departure for foreign employment, and Nepali immigration checks it at the airport. It is the worker’s permit, applied for with the contract, visa and your demand letter, and the rules change, so confirm the current process with the Department or the Nepali Embassy in Canberra.
Which Nepali occupations can be sponsored on a standard 482? Chefs, cooks, hotel managers, registered and enrolled nurses, carpenters, welders, electricians, motor mechanics, accountants, IT roles and others on the Core Skills list. Aged and disability carers are sponsored under the Aged Care Industry Labour Agreement, and heavy-vehicle drivers under a DAMA, because those occupations are not listed.
Is there a Working Holiday visa for Nepal? No. Nepali citizens come as students, skilled migrants or sponsored workers, which is why so many Nepali candidates are already onshore on student and 485 visas.
Can the worker pay the sponsorship costs? No. Sponsorship approval, the nomination charge and the levy are the sponsor’s by law and cannot be recovered from the worker. Asking for or receiving a payment in return for sponsorship is an offence.
