Nursing occupations and their visas
All of the following are assessed by ANMAC and carry the 482, 186 and 494 through an employer. Those marked MLTSSL also carry the points-tested 189, 190 and 491.
| Occupation | ANZSCO | Lists |
|---|---|---|
| Registered Nurse: aged care, critical care and emergency, mental health, perioperative, medical, surgical, paediatrics, community health, child and family health, medical practice, disability and rehabilitation, developmental disability, nec | 2544xx | MLTSSL, Core Skills |
| Midwife | 254111 | MLTSSL, Core Skills |
| Nurse Practitioner | 254411 | MLTSSL, Core Skills |
| Enrolled Nurse | 411411 | Short-term, Core Skills (482, 186, 494, 190, 491; no 189) |
| Nurse Educator / Nurse Researcher | 254211 / 254212 | Short-term, Core Skills |
| Nurse Manager | 254311 | Short-term list only: 190, 491, 494; no standard 482 or 186 |
| Nursing Support Worker / Personal Care Assistant | 423312 | Not listed: sponsored under the Aged Care Industry Labour Agreement |
The Nurse Manager line surprises people recruited at unit-manager level from overseas: the occupation cannot be nominated on a standard 482, so employers nominate the clinical RN occupation that matches the duties, or use the 494 in a regional area.
Ahpra registration: the real timeline
You cannot work as a nurse in Australia without registration from the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia through Ahpra. For internationally qualified nurses whose qualification is not recognised as substantially equivalent, the path is the Outcome-Based Assessment:
- Self-check and application to Ahpra, with English evidence.
- Orientation Part 1 (online), then the NCLEX-RN multiple-choice examination, sat at a testing centre in many countries.
- Orientation Part 2 and the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), currently sat in Adelaide, which usually means travelling to Australia.
- Registration, then the employer’s nomination.
Nurses trained in some jurisdictions with comparable programs can be registered without the OBA. Either way, sponsoring employers generally want evidence that registration is in hand or at the OSCE stage before they lodge a nomination; many large health services run their own international recruitment programs that walk candidates through it. The ANMAC skills assessment for migration (full assessment A$595) is a separate process from registration, required for the points-tested visas and wherever the Department’s instrument lists your passport for the 482.
English scores
For registration, the Board’s English standard is IELTS Academic 7.0 in each of the four components, OET grade B in each, PTE Academic 65 in each, or TOEFL iBT equivalents, in one sitting or two sittings within six months subject to the Board’s rules, unless you qualify for an exemption through education in a recognised English-speaking country. The 482 visa itself only asks for IELTS 5.0 across the board, so the registration score is the one to plan around.
Who sponsors nurses
- State and territory health services (WA Health, Queensland Health, NSW local health districts, SA Health, the NT and Tasmania) recruit internationally for regional and specialty roles and sponsor on the 482 with a 186 pathway; several advertise relocation support.
- Private hospital groups sponsor theatre, ICU, emergency and mental-health nurses in the capitals.
- Aged care providers sponsor registered nurses (aged care) and, under the Aged Care Industry Labour Agreement, the nursing support and personal care workforce the lists exclude.
- Regional hospitals and health services use the 494 and, in DAMA regions, agreements with concessions.
Our healthcare sponsorship guide covers the employer side, and the companies that sponsor hub lists health employers on the Department’s approved-sponsor list.
Visas, salary and processing
- 482 Core Skills: up to four years; median processing about four months in the Department’s September 2026 figures; the 186 transition after two years with the sponsor.
- 186 Direct Entry: permanent from the start with the assessment and experience; median processing was 21 months in the same figures, so most employers lead with the 482.
- 494: regional employer-sponsored, five years, permanent 191 after three.
- 189, 190, 491: points-tested with no employer, available to registered nurses, midwives and nurse practitioners on the MLTSSL; state health departments often run nomination streams for nurses.
Registered nurse salaries run from roughly A$75,000 to A$110,000 on public awards depending on state and year level, with penalties on top, so the A$79,423 income threshold is rarely an obstacle beyond the first year or two. The employer pays sponsorship approval (A$420), the nomination (A$330) and the training levy; the 482 visa charge of A$4,015 is yours unless the package covers it, and many health services do.
Steps for an overseas nurse
- Sit the English test first and aim at the registration scores, not the visa scores.
- Apply to Ahpra and start the OBA; book the NCLEX-RN as soon as you are eligible.
- Lodge the ANMAC assessment in parallel if you are also running a points-tested application.
- Register a free profile with your specialty, years and registration stage; health employers searching here filter on exactly that.
- Apply to state health international recruitment programs and aged care groups directly, and read the registered nurse sponsorship guide for the step-by-step.
Frequently asked questions
Can an overseas nurse get sponsored in Australia without Ahpra registration? A nomination can be lodged, but you cannot work as a nurse until you are registered, so employers almost always require registration, or at least a confirmed OSCE date, before sponsoring. Plan the Outcome-Based Assessment first; the visa follows it.
What IELTS score do nurses need for Australia? For registration, IELTS Academic 7.0 in each band (or OET B in each, or PTE 65 in each), unless you qualify for an exemption through education in a recognised English-speaking country. The 482 visa itself requires only 5.0 across the board, so the registration score is the one that matters.
Can an enrolled nurse be sponsored? Yes. Enrolled Nurse (411411) is on the Core Skills list with the 482, 186 and 494 available, assessed by ANMAC. It is not on the MLTSSL, so the points-tested 189 is not available; the 190 and 491 are.
Can a nurse manager be sponsored on a 482? Not as Nurse Manager (254311), which is on the short-term list only. Employers nominate the matching clinical registered nurse occupation instead, or use the regional 494 or state nomination.
Which states sponsor the most nurses? All state and territory health services recruit internationally. Regional and remote positions in Western Australia, Queensland, the Northern Territory and New South Wales are where sponsorship and relocation packages are most common, alongside aged care providers nationally.
