Licence classes, fatigue and the checks
- Classes: HR (rigid), HC (heavy combination, semi-trailer), MC (multi-combination, B-double and road train). MC normally requires time held on HC under state graduated rules, which is why MC drivers are the scarce ones. Overseas licences do not transfer to a heavy class; the driver converts to a state licence and progresses.
- Fatigue management: Basic or Advanced Fatigue Management accreditation for the operator, work diaries for drivers on regulated work; a driver without recent Australian fatigue training needs it before the first long run.
- Medical and other tickets: commercial driver medical, dangerous goods licence for tankers, forklift for dock work, site inductions for mining haulage.
- Right to work: a VEVO check for every visa holder before the first shift.
Ask for the licence class, the date it was obtained and recent run types in the application; it screens faster than any interview.
Where to find drivers
| Channel | Cost | What it is good for |
|---|---|---|
| SEEK, Indeed, Jora | Paid; free organic | Volume; every operator is there, so the ad has to stand out on pay and roster |
| Driver-specific boards (Driver Jobs Australia, Big Rigs classifieds) and trucking Facebook groups | Free to low cost | Where experienced HC and MC drivers actually look; a named depot contact matters |
| Workforce Australia | Free | Regional reach; wage subsidies for eligible hires |
| Driver labour hire | Hourly margin | Peaks and cover, not a long-term fleet |
| SponsorTalent | Free listing and search; A$30 per contact | The largest single candidate pool on the site: drivers already onshore on Working Holiday, graduate and bridging visas holding Australian licences, and experienced overseas drivers for DAMA sponsorship; licence class and location visible |
Pay and the ad
Drivers choose on three things the ad usually omits: the rate (hourly or kilometre, with the award classification), the runs (local, regional, linehaul, FIFO), and the roster (home every night, four-on-four-off, changeovers). State all three and the truck and gear (B-double, road train, Road Ranger). The Road Transport and Distribution Award and the Long Distance Operations Award set the floors; experienced MC linehaul drivers earn well above them. Use the job ad template; an ad without pay in this market is invisible.
The pool already here
Working Holiday makers from the UK, Ireland and Europe with heavy-vehicle experience, 485 graduates and bridging-visa holders are already driving on Australian licences, and they can work for you today after a VEVO check (six months per employer on a Working Holiday visa unless an exemption applies). They are the quickest driver hires available, and under a DAMA they can be nominated onshore. Who can work for you now.
The long term: why drivers need a DAMA
Truck Driver (General), ANZSCO 733111, is absent from every skilled occupation list, so no standard 482, 494 or 186 can be nominated for a driver however severe the shortage; nominating under a different title is refused as not genuine. Transport operators sponsor drivers through a regional Designated Area Migration Agreement: endorsement by the region’s representative, a labour agreement with the Department, then nominations on the 482 labour-agreement stream with concessions on age, English and salary, and a 186 pathway where the deed provides it. Most of the twelve DAMAs list driving occupations, and the first driver takes six to twelve months; later drivers follow the visa clock only. The full route: how to sponsor a truck driver; the regions: DAMA sponsorship; your state’s position: sponsor workers in your state.
Frequently asked questions
Can I sponsor a truck driver on a 482 visa? Not on the standard 482: Truck Driver (733111) is not on any skilled occupation list. Drivers are sponsored under a regional DAMA or a company labour agreement on the 482 labour-agreement stream, after the employer is endorsed by the region and holds the agreement.
Where do experienced MC drivers look for jobs? Driver-specific boards and trucking groups as much as SEEK; the ad needs the rate, the runs and the roster to be noticed. Drivers who need sponsorship or hold temporary visas register on SponsorTalent, where it is the largest occupation pool.
Can an overseas driver use their licence in Australia? Not for heavy vehicles. The driver converts to a state licence and must hold the Australian class the job needs; MC requires time on HC under state rules, so offshore recruits usually start on HC work.
Can I hire a backpacker as a truck driver? Yes, if they hold the Australian licence class for the vehicle and have completed fatigue management training where the work requires it. Working Holiday makers can work any hours but six months per employer unless an exemption applies; register with the ATO before the first payment.
How long does it take to get a sponsored driver? Six to twelve months for the first driver (regional endorsement, then the labour agreement, then nomination and visa at a median of four months); later drivers skip the first two steps. Drivers already onshore under a DAMA are quicker.
