Ireland against the UK: what is the same and what is not
| Requirement | Irish citizens | UK citizens |
|---|---|---|
| English test | Exempt as Irish passport holders | Exempt |
| Labour market testing | Required: two ads of at least 28 days on platforms with national reach, within the four months before nomination | Exempt under the Australia–UK free trade agreement |
| Mandatory skills assessment for the 482 | Not listed; a formal assessment is optional for the 482, required for 186 Direct Entry | Same |
| Working Holiday | To age 35; specified regional work still required for a second or third year | To 35; no regional work requirement since 1 July 2024 |
The practical consequence: start the advertising the day you decide to hire, because it is the only four-week wait in the file. An Irish candidate who also holds a UK passport (anyone born in Northern Ireland is entitled to one) is a UK citizen for the exemption, so ask. The Department’s exemption list is set by trade obligations and has grown since 2023; check it before relying on it: labour market testing.
Who Australian employers hire from Ireland
- Trades: electricians, plumbers, carpenters, bricklayers, plasterers, fitters, welders, heavy-vehicle mechanics. The Irish apprenticeship (QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate Craft) maps cleanly to the Certificate III standard that Trades Recognition Australia assesses, and Irish electricians follow the same Offshore Technical Skills Record route as British ones before a provisional licence.
- Nurses and midwives: Ireland is among the comparable jurisdictions in the Nursing and Midwifery Board’s streamlined registration standard from April 2025, which replaced the examinations with a practice-hours requirement, and English is exempt for registration where the qualification was completed in Ireland. Hiring nurses.
- Teachers: Irish-trained teachers meet AITSL’s English requirement by qualification and are recruited for secondary science, mathematics and special education.
- Engineers, quantity surveyors and construction managers: Engineers Australia and VETASSESS assessments; Irish degrees are Washington Accord-recognised.
- Chefs and hospitality managers: the limited-service-restaurant caveat and the salary floor apply.
Candidate context: visa sponsorship jobs from Ireland.
The Australian side, step by step
- Confirm the occupation is on the Core Skills or regional list and the salary meets A$79,423 and the market rate: sponsored jobs by occupation.
- Advertise for 28 days on two national-reach platforms, keeping copies, dates and the applicant outcomes; this is the labour market testing evidence (job ad template, Workforce Australia as one free option).
- Standard Business Sponsorship (A$420; median 11 days) if you do not already hold it.
- Nomination (A$330 plus the Skilling Australians Fund levy of A$1,200 per visa year under A$10m turnover) and the visa (A$4,015 for a 482; A$6,140 for a 494 or 186), lodged together.
- Licensing after arrival for electricians, plumbers and gas fitters, and refrigeration mechanics; a White Card for site trades.

The Working Holiday pipeline
Irish citizens can take a Working Holiday visa to age 35 and earn second and third years through specified regional work, which is why so many are on regional construction sites, mines and farms. Condition 8547 limits work with one employer to six months unless exempt, so an employer who wants to keep an Irish tradesperson should lodge the nomination inside the first four months. The sequence: sponsoring an existing employee; the rules for the visa itself: employing working holiday makers.
Permanent residency and age
Most Irish hires go 482 then 186 Temporary Residence Transition after two years with the sponsor; the 186 generally requires the worker to be under 45 at application, while the 482 has no age limit and regional 494 nominations and several DAMAs carry age concessions. Plan the permanent route at the start for a candidate over 40.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need labour market testing to sponsor an Irish citizen? Yes. Ireland has no trade-agreement exemption, so the standard test applies: two advertisements of at least 28 days each on platforms with national reach within the four months before nomination. A candidate who also holds a UK passport is exempt as a UK citizen.
Does an Irish worker need an English test? No. Irish passport holders are exempt from the English requirement for the 482, 494 and 186, and an Irish nursing or teaching qualification generally satisfies the regulator’s English standard too.
Does an Irish tradesperson need a skills assessment? Not for the 482 in most cases: Irish passports are not listed in the mandatory skills-assessment instrument. A TRA assessment is still required for the 186 Direct Entry, and licensed trades need the state licence after arrival.
How long does it take to sponsor someone from Ireland? Allow four weeks for the advertising, then the Department’s medians: 64 days for the nomination and four months for a Core Skills 482, or 37 days on the Specialist Skills stream. Plan on four to six months to a start date from overseas, less for a candidate already onshore.
Is there an Irish-side process? No. Ireland imposes no exit permit, contract attestation or agency requirement on citizens taking work in Australia.
