Free job boards in Australia, compared
| Board | Free tier | The catch | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Workforce Australia (government) | Free to register (ABN and myID) and post; free candidate search; free employment-services providers | Traffic skews to job seekers in the employment-services system; slow for skilled roles | Entry-level and regional roles, wage-subsidy hires, and the public-record ad many employers keep for labour market testing |
| Jora | Free employer posting (monthly cap applies; sources quote different limits) | Aggregator audience; limited screening tools | Volume roles, hospitality, retail, trades |
| Indeed | Free organic listing | Organic ads sink within days; visibility is sold per click; Indeed may require ads to meet its quality rules | Almost any role, if you are willing to sponsor for visibility |
| One free job post at a time, limited distribution | Free posts reach your network and little else; promotion is paid | Professional and office roles | |
| CareerOne | Free to post, 21 days | Unlocking applications and downloading resumes uses paid credits | Metropolitan white-collar and trades roles |
| Gumtree Jobs | One free ad in the jobs category | Audience quality varies; little employer tooling | Local casual and semi-skilled roles |
| ApprenticeshipCentral | Free registration and vacancies (run by BUSY at Work) | Apprentices and trainees only | Trade apprenticeships |
| Jobb.com.au, Craigslist, NowHiring | Free, unlimited | Small audiences | A no-cost extra listing, not a primary channel |
| SponsorTalent | Free employer registration, free standard listing of the roles you need, free candidate search | A$30 to unlock a candidate’s contact; A$149 for a featured listing with five unlocks | Roles you cannot fill locally: candidates who need sponsorship, and students, graduates and Working Holiday makers already in Australia |
Limits and terms on third-party boards change without notice; the figures above are as published by the boards and comparison sites in 2026 and are worth a glance at the board’s own page before you rely on them.
What "free" usually means
Three models hide behind the word. Free to post, paid to be seen (Indeed, LinkedIn): the listing exists, but it sits below promoted ads within days. Free to post, paid to respond (CareerOne): applications arrive but opening them costs credits. Free end to end (Workforce Australia, Jora’s free tier, SponsorTalent’s listing and search): the only cost is the audience you reach. SponsorTalent’s charge sits at the point of contact, A$30 when you decide to talk to someone, which is the equivalent of a resume download elsewhere, and nothing is charged for listing or browsing.
When a paid SEEK ad is worth it
SEEK remains the largest Australian candidate pool and prices each ad by role and location (third-party estimates put most ads between about A$250 and A$460 at bundle rates; the exact figure shows in SEEK’s price tool once you have a free employer account). The sensible sequence for a small business is free boards first, SEEK when the role has proven hard to fill, and then the question nobody asks early enough: is there a local candidate at all? If two free boards and a SEEK ad produce no suitable Australian applicant, that is the evidence the Department wants for a sponsored hire, and the next page to read is what to do when you cannot find staff.
How the free listing on SponsorTalent works
- Register free with your business details and the roles you are hiring for. Listings from businesses with a corporate email or an ABN and Australian phone go live as standard listings after an automatic check; others are reviewed first.
- Your roles appear on the jobs board and in the daily digests sent to registered candidates in matching occupations.
- Search the candidate pool yourself by occupation, location, visa status, skills-assessment status and English result, and unlock the contacts you want to interview at A$30 each. A featured listing (A$149) sits at the top of the board and includes five unlocks.
The pool is different from the general boards: candidates here state that they need sponsorship or hold a temporary visa with work rights, so you know the visa question before the first call. If you have never sponsored, the cost-benefit in one page and who can work for you today are the two reads.
Write the ad once, post it everywhere
Every board needs the same core: exact title, employer name, location, employment type, pay or pay range, duties, the requirements that are genuinely necessary, and how to apply. Australian law prohibits criteria that discriminate on age, race, nationality and the other protected attributes; "right to work in Australia" is lawful, "Australian citizens only" generally is not unless the law for that role requires it. A free template that covers the legal points: job ad template for Australian employers.
Frequently asked questions
Can I post a job on SEEK for free? No. SEEK has no free tier; each ad is priced by role, location and candidate demand, with the exact price shown in SEEK’s price tool after you open a free employer account. Workforce Australia, Jora, Indeed (organic), CareerOne, Gumtree and SponsorTalent all offer free posting.
Is Workforce Australia free for employers? Yes. Businesses register with an ABN and myID, post vacancies free, search candidates free, and can use Workforce Australia Services providers at no charge, including wage subsidies for eligible hires.
Which free job board has the best reach? Indeed for raw traffic, though organic listings lose visibility within days; Jora for volume roles; Workforce Australia for job seekers in the employment-services system. For roles you cannot fill locally, SponsorTalent carries the candidates the other boards do not: people who need sponsorship and visa holders already onshore.
Is SponsorTalent free for employers? Registration, listing the roles you need and searching candidates are free. You pay A$30 to unlock a candidate’s contact details, or A$149 for a featured listing that includes five unlocks.
Can I use a free job ad for labour market testing? Yes, if it meets the Department’s requirements for a sponsorship nomination: the right title and duties, the salary stated, at least 28 days live, within the four months before lodging, and dated evidence kept. The board being free is irrelevant; what the ad says and how long it ran is what counts.
Post your roles free and search the candidates
Free employer registration, free standard listings, free candidate search. A$30 per contact unlocked.
