The codes
| Role | ANZSCO | 482 / 186 | Other routes and notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fitness Instructor, Personal Trainer, Group Fitness Instructor | 452111 | No | No list; onshore visa holders and DAMAs only |
| Fitness Centre Manager; Sports Centre Manager | 149112 / 149113 | No (regional list only) | 494 outside Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane; 491 |
| Other Sports Coach or Instructor (football, tennis, martial arts, dance-sport, climbing and every other sport) | 452317 | Listed, but caveated | Only a position provided for under an international trade obligation (an intra-corporate transfer or a trade-agreement provision); an ordinary club or academy hire fails the caveat |
| Swimming Coach or Instructor; Gymnastics Coach or Instructor; Snowsport Instructor | 452315 / 452312 / 452314 | No (Short-term list only) | 494 regionally; 190/491 by state nomination |
| Sports Development Officer | 452321 | Yes | VETASSESS; a participation, pathway or program-development role at a club, association or council, not coaching |
| Sportspersons nec (professional athlete) | 452499 | Yes | VETASSESS; professional players; sporting bodies often use the 408 Temporary Activity (sporting) visa instead |
| Sports Administrator; Sports Umpire; Other Sports Official | 139915 / 452322 / 452323 | No (regional list only) | 494, 491 |
| Physiotherapist, Dietitian | 252511 / 251111 | Yes | Allied health, registered or accredited (Exercise Physiologist 234915 is regional list only: 494 and 491); see physiotherapists and the care hub |
The gap that gyms notice is that a Certificate IV in Fitness carries no weight with the lists at all, while an allied-health degree carries all of it. A gym or sports medicine practice that needs a sponsored professional hires the physiotherapist or dietitian, not the trainer (an exercise physiologist only regionally, on the 494).
The 408 for athletes and coaches, briefly
Professional sporting bodies bring in players and high-performance coaches on the subclass 408 Temporary Activity visa (sporting activities stream), sponsored by the club or body as a temporary activities sponsor, for up to two years. It is not a path to permanent residence and it does not cover gym staff, but for a club signing an overseas player or a national-level coach it is the usual visa. Everything else in this page is about the employer-sponsored skilled visas.
The DAMA route
Designated Area Migration Agreements are the exception to the lists. Regional agreements carry occupations the national lists omit; the Kimberley list (October 2025 version), for example, includes forklift drivers, truck drivers, retail and hospitality roles, and other regional agreements carry some of the same. The business must be in the region, endorsed by the regional body, and the worker must meet the agreement’s concessions on English, salary and age. Which agreement covers your area: sponsor workers in your state; how DAMAs compare with the other routes: PALM, labour agreement or DAMA.
Who can work for you now
The role does not have to wait for a visa. Three groups can work for you today without sponsorship, and gyms and clubs already run on them:
- Working holiday makers (417 and 462): any role, six months per employer; register with the ATO for the 15 per cent rate and pay super. Employing working holiday makers.
- International students: 48 hours a fortnight in term, unlimited in breaks. Employing international students.
- Partner, graduate (485) and bridging visa holders: full work rights, a VEVO check and nothing else. Who can work for you now.
SponsorTalent lists candidates by occupation, visa and city, so you can see who can start on Monday before you make contact; search is free and a contact unlocks for A$30.
Fitness is a student-heavy workforce, and a Certificate III or IV in Fitness is a common course for working holiday makers and students; the six-month limit applies to gym work, so a working holiday maker rotates out unless the gym is in northern Australia under the tourism exemption. Employing working holiday makers; employing international students.
Do not nominate the role under an occupation it is not. A personal trainer nominated as a Sports Development Officer or a coach as an Other Sports Coach outside a trade obligation is tested against the duties, the qualification, the award classification and the pay, and a mismatch is refused, can bar the business from sponsoring for years, and exposes the worker to cancellation. If the person genuinely does the listed job and holds its qualification, nominate that job at its rate; if not, use the routes above.
Frequently asked questions
Is personal trainer on the skilled occupation list? No. Fitness Instructor 452111, which covers personal trainers and group fitness instructors, is on no Australian skilled list, so the 482, 186 and 494 are not available.
Can I sponsor a sports coach? Rarely. Other Sports Coach or Instructor 452317 is on the Core Skills list but caveated to positions provided for under an international trade obligation, which excludes an ordinary club or academy hire. Swimming, gymnastics and snowsport coaches are Short-term list only (494 regionally or state nomination). Sports Development Officer 452321 is available for program and pathway roles.
Can a gym sponsor a manager? Only regionally: Fitness Centre Manager 149112 is on the regional list, so the 494 is available outside Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, with the 191 after three years.
How do clubs bring in overseas players and coaches? Through the subclass 408 Temporary Activity visa (sporting activities), sponsored by the club or sporting body for up to two years. It is not a permanent pathway.
