Can I sponsor a delivery driver, bus driver or courier in Australia?

No. Delivery Driver (732111), Bus Driver (731211), Coach Driver, Courier and Taxi Driver are skill level 4 occupations on no skilled list, so a bus operator, courier company, delivery fleet or rideshare business cannot nominate drivers for a 482, 186 or 494, and the same is true of truck drivers. The rosters are filled, in every city, by visa holders who need no sponsorship, whose overseas licences convert or who can be trained to a heavy vehicle licence in weeks. The sponsored routes are the regional DAMAs that list driving occupations and the listed roles above the drivers: fleet managers, supply and distribution managers and diesel mechanics.

Checked against the Department of Home Affairs occupation lists and price list, 1 July 2026 settings. Updated 29 October 2026.

Why not

The Core Skills list starts, with few exceptions, at skill level 3; driving occupations sit at level 4, and the Department has held since 2018 that driver shortages are a licensing and conditions matter addressed through the DAMAs rather than the national list. Bus and coach drivers need a state heavy vehicle licence and driver authority, which any worker with work rights can obtain; a visa does not change that. Labour market testing only matters once an occupation is nominable.

Who can drive for you now

The role does not have to wait for a visa. Three groups can work for you today without sponsorship, and bus, courier and delivery fleets already run on them:

SponsorTalent lists candidates by occupation, visa and city, so you can see who can start on Monday before you make contact; search is free and a contact unlocks for A$30.

Most overseas car licences convert to an Australian licence after a knowledge and practical test; medium and heavy rigid licences follow after a holding period and a course. Bus driver authorities in each state require a police check and a medical. A working holiday maker can drive for you for six months, a student within 48 hours a fortnight in term and full time in breaks, a 485 graduate or partner visa holder without limit.

The DAMA route

Designated Area Migration Agreements are the exception to the lists. Regional agreements carry occupations the national lists omit; the Kimberley list (October 2025 version), for example, includes forklift drivers, truck drivers, retail and hospitality roles, and other regional agreements carry some of the same. The business must be in the region, endorsed by the regional body, and the worker must meet the agreement’s concessions on English, salary and age. Which agreement covers your area: sponsor workers in your state; how DAMAs compare with the other routes: PALM, labour agreement or DAMA.

Driving occupations appear on several regional agreements: the Kimberley list names Truck Driver and Forklift Driver, the Northern Territory agreement carries bus and truck driving, and others in Queensland, South Australia and Victoria do too. A regional bus operator or freight company should read its agreement’s list before anything else.

The listed roles above the drivers

Fleet Manager (149411) and Supply and Distribution Manager (133611) are on the Core Skills list for genuine management roles, Diesel Motor Mechanics and Automotive Electricians who keep the fleet running are listed trades, and a driver trainer who holds a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment may fit a vocational education role in some organisations. The sector list: transport and logistics occupations you can sponsor. Do not nominate the role under an occupation it is not. A driver nominated as a Fleet Manager or a depot leading hand as a Supply and Distribution Manager is tested against the duties, the qualification, the award classification and the pay, and a mismatch is refused, can bar the business from sponsoring for years, and exposes the worker to cancellation. If the person genuinely does the listed job and holds its qualification, nominate that job at its rate; if not, use the routes above.

Frequently asked questions

Is bus driver on the skilled occupation list? No. Bus driver, coach driver, delivery driver, courier and taxi driver are on no Australian skilled list, so the 482, 186 and 494 are not available.

Can a regional bus company sponsor drivers under a DAMA? Possibly, where the regional agreement lists the occupation: the Northern Territory and Kimberley agreements carry driving roles, and others do too. The business must be in the region and endorsed by its DAMA body.

Can a working holiday maker drive a bus? Yes, with the state heavy vehicle licence and driver authority, for six months with one employer unless an exemption or permission applies.

Can I sponsor my depot manager? If the role is genuinely Fleet Manager or Supply and Distribution Manager with the duties, the qualification and a salary of at least A$79,423, yes; those occupations are on the Core Skills list.
