Points Calculator Questions

Common questions about the Australian skilled visa points test.

You need a minimum of 65 points to be eligible for a Subclass 189 (Skilled Independent) visa. However, competitive invitation scores are typically 80-90+ points depending on the occupation. The 190 visa requires 65 points including the 5-point state nomination bonus, and the 491 requires 65 points including the 15-point regional bonus.
The Subclass 189 is a permanent visa that does not require any sponsorship or nomination. The Subclass 190 requires nomination by a state or territory government (adds 5 points) and grants permanent residency. The Subclass 491 is a provisional regional visa requiring state/territory or eligible family nomination (adds 15 points), which leads to permanent residency (Subclass 191) after living and working in a regional area for 3 years.
You can increase your points by improving your English score (e.g., achieving IELTS 8 in all bands for 20 points), gaining more skilled work experience (especially Australian experience), completing a Professional Year program (5 points), obtaining NAATI accreditation for community language (5 points), or pursuing further education such as a PhD. If you still don't meet the 65-point threshold, consider employer-sponsored visa pathways like the Subclass 482 or 494 which do not require a points test. Browse employer sponsors here.
If you do not meet the 65-point minimum, employer-sponsored visas are an excellent alternative. The Subclass 482 (Temporary Skill Shortage) and Subclass 494 (Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional) visas do not require a points test. You need a skills assessment, relevant qualifications, and an Australian employer willing to sponsor you. SponsorTalent connects you with approved sponsor employers.
