Technology Talent Shortage in Australia
Australia's technology sector is expanding at pace, driven by digital transformation, cybersecurity demands, cloud computing adoption, and the growth of artificial intelligence. However, the domestic supply of qualified IT professionals cannot keep up with demand. Industry reports consistently identify technology as one of the sectors with the most acute skills shortages in the country.
Employer sponsorship allows technology companies, consultancies, and businesses across all industries to recruit overseas IT professionals to fill roles that cannot be filled locally. The technology sector is one of the highest users of the 482 visa program.
Commonly Sponsored IT Occupations
| Occupation | ANZSCO Code | 482 stream (usual) |
|---|---|---|
| Software Engineer | 261313 | Core Skills (CSOL) |
| Developer Programmer | 261312 | Core Skills (CSOL) |
| Analyst Programmer | 261311 | Core Skills (CSOL) |
| ICT Business Analyst | 261111 | Core Skills (CSOL) |
| Systems Analyst | 261112 | Core Skills (CSOL) |
| Database Administrator | 262111 | Core Skills (CSOL) |
| ICT Security Specialist | 262112 | Core Skills (CSOL) |
| Computer Network Professional | 263111 | Core Skills (CSOL) |
| ICT Project Manager | 135112 | Core Skills (CSOL) |
The 482 Core Skills stream requires the occupation to be on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL). Occupations, caveats and lists change, so check the current CSOL entry for the specific ANZSCO code before nominating.
Mostly on the Core Skills Occupation List
Most ICT occupations are on the Core Skills Occupation List, which means they are eligible for the 482 Core Skills stream with a pathway to permanent residency. Senior roles paid at or above the Specialist Skills Income Threshold can also use the Specialist Skills stream. This makes IT one of the most straightforward sectors for employer sponsorship.
Visa Pathways for IT Workers
482 Skills in Demand — Core Skills stream
The most commonly used pathway for IT professionals. Provides up to four years of work rights and a route to permanent residency through the 186 Temporary Residence Transition stream after two years of full-time work for approved sponsors. This is ideal for employers looking to retain overseas IT talent long-term.
482 Skills in Demand — Specialist Skills stream
Where the guaranteed annual earnings are at or above the Specialist Skills Income Threshold (SSIT, A$146,576 from 1 July 2026), the Specialist Skills stream is open to most occupations regardless of whether they are on the Core Skills Occupation List. Trades workers, machinery operators and drivers, and labourers are excluded from this stream.
186 Visa — Direct Entry
For experienced IT professionals with a positive ACS skills assessment and at least three years of relevant experience, the 186 Direct Entry stream offers immediate permanent residency. This is attractive for senior developers, architects, and IT managers.
494 Visa — Regional
Technology companies operating in regional areas can sponsor IT workers on the 494 visa. With remote work becoming more common, this pathway is increasingly relevant for tech businesses headquartered outside major cities.
ACS Skills Assessment
The Australian Computer Society (ACS) is the designated assessing authority for all ICT occupations. The ACS assessment evaluates:
- Qualifications: Whether the applicant's degree is ICT-major or ICT-minor (or non-ICT with relevant experience)
- Experience: The number of years of relevant employment required depends on the qualification level
- Recency: The experience must be recent and relevant to the nominated occupation
Experience Requirements by Qualification
| Qualification Type | Experience Required |
|---|---|
| ICT Major (Bachelor or higher) | 2 years relevant experience |
| ICT Minor (Bachelor or higher) | 4 years relevant experience |
| Non-ICT qualification | 6 years relevant experience |
| No formal qualification | 8 years relevant experience |
Salary Requirements
IT workers must be offered at least the Core Skills Income Threshold (CSIT, A$79,423 from 1 July 2026) and the annual market salary rate. In practice, most IT roles in Australia command salaries well above this threshold:
- Software Engineer: $100,000 to $160,000+
- ICT Business Analyst: $95,000 to $140,000
- ICT Security Specialist: $110,000 to $170,000+
- ICT Project Manager: $120,000 to $180,000+
Salary ranges are indicative market figures, not visa thresholds. The CSIT is A$79,423 from 1 July 2026 and the Specialist Skills Income Threshold (SSIT) is A$146,576; both are indexed each year, so confirm the current figures on the Department of Home Affairs website before nominating.
Challenges in IT Sponsorship
- ACS experience deductions: ACS deducts a number of years from the applicant's total experience based on their qualification, which can affect eligibility
- Occupation code selection: IT roles often overlap multiple ANZSCO codes; selecting the wrong one can lead to nomination issues
- Contractor arrangements: The Department may scrutinise IT nominations where the worker will be placed at a client site rather than working at the sponsor's premises
- Rapid technology change: Skills assessments must reflect current technology skills, not just historical experience
