Engineering Skills Shortages
Australia faces persistent shortages of qualified engineers across virtually all disciplines. Major infrastructure projects, mining expansion, energy transition, and urban development are driving unprecedented demand for engineering talent. Engineers Australia reports that the profession is one of the most undersupplied in the country, with demand far outstripping domestic graduate supply.
Employer sponsorship is a critical tool for engineering firms, mining companies, construction businesses, and government agencies seeking to fill engineering roles that cannot be recruited locally.
Commonly Sponsored Engineering Occupations
| Occupation | ANZSCO Code | 482 stream (usual) |
|---|---|---|
| Civil Engineer | 233211 | Core Skills (CSOL) |
| Mechanical Engineer | 233512 | Core Skills (CSOL) |
| Electrical Engineer | 233311 | Core Skills (CSOL) |
| Mining Engineer | 233611 | Core Skills (CSOL) |
| Chemical Engineer | 233111 | Core Skills (CSOL) |
| Structural Engineer | 233214 | Core Skills (CSOL) |
| Industrial Engineer | 233511 | Core Skills (CSOL) |
| Electronics Engineer | 233411 | Core Skills (CSOL) |
| Environmental Engineer | 233915 | Core Skills (CSOL) |
The 482 Core Skills stream requires the occupation to be on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL). Occupations, caveats and lists change, so check the current CSOL entry for the specific ANZSCO code before nominating.
Full PR Pathway
The engineering occupations above are generally on the Core Skills Occupation List, giving access to the 482 Core Skills stream with a pathway to permanent residency through the 186 Temporary Residence Transition stream. Check the current list entry for the specific ANZSCO code before nominating.
Visa Pathways for Engineers
482 Skills in Demand — Core Skills stream
The most popular pathway for sponsored engineers. Provides up to four years of work rights, with a route to permanent residency through the 186 Temporary Residence Transition stream after two years of full-time work for approved sponsors. Suitable for engineers at all career levels.
482 Skills in Demand — Specialist Skills stream
Where the guaranteed annual earnings are at or above the Specialist Skills Income Threshold (SSIT, A$146,576 from 1 July 2026), the Specialist Skills stream is open to most occupations regardless of whether they are on the Core Skills Occupation List. Trades workers, machinery operators and drivers, and labourers are excluded from this stream.
186 Visa — Direct Entry
Experienced engineers with a positive Engineers Australia assessment and three or more years of post-qualification experience can be nominated for immediate permanent residency. This is attractive for senior engineers and engineering managers.
494 Visa — Regional
For engineering positions in regional Australia, including mining sites, regional infrastructure projects, and manufacturing facilities. Provides up to five years and a PR pathway through the 191 visa.
Engineers Australia Skills Assessment
Engineers Australia is the designated assessing authority for all engineering occupations. The assessment process involves submitting a Competency Demonstration Report (CDR) that demonstrates the applicant's engineering competencies against Australian standards.
CDR Requirements
The CDR consists of three main components:
- Three Career Episodes: Detailed narratives (1,000 to 2,500 words each) describing specific engineering projects or work experiences that demonstrate the applicant's engineering competencies
- Summary Statement: A cross-reference document mapping each career episode to the specific competency elements defined by Engineers Australia
- Curriculum Vitae: A detailed CV covering education, employment history, and professional development
Assessment Categories
Engineers Australia assesses applicants into one of four categories based on their qualification level:
| Category | Qualification Equivalent |
|---|---|
| Professional Engineer | 4-year Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) or equivalent |
| Engineering Technologist | 3-year Bachelor of Engineering Technology or equivalent |
| Engineering Associate | 2-year Associate Degree or Advanced Diploma |
| Engineering Manager | Assessed under a separate managerial competency framework |
Washington Accord Fast Track
Engineers who graduated from a program accredited under the Washington Accord, Sydney Accord, or Dublin Accord may be eligible for a fast-track assessment without needing to submit a full CDR. This can significantly reduce processing time and cost.
Salary Requirements
Engineers must be offered at least the Core Skills Income Threshold (CSIT, A$79,423 from 1 July 2026) and the annual market salary rate. Engineering salaries in Australia are generally well above the CSIT:
- Civil Engineer: $85,000 to $140,000
- Mechanical Engineer: $90,000 to $140,000
- Electrical Engineer: $90,000 to $145,000
- Mining Engineer: $120,000 to $200,000+
- Chemical Engineer: $95,000 to $150,000
Salary ranges are indicative market figures, not visa thresholds. The CSIT is A$79,423 from 1 July 2026 and the Specialist Skills Income Threshold (SSIT) is A$146,576; both are indexed each year, so confirm the current figures on the Department of Home Affairs website before nominating.
Challenges in Engineering Sponsorship
- CDR quality: The Competency Demonstration Report must be well-written and clearly demonstrate competencies; poorly prepared CDRs are a common reason for negative assessments
- Occupation matching: Engineering roles can span multiple ANZSCO codes; selecting the correct one is critical for nomination success
- State registration: Some engineering work in Australia requires registration with the relevant state board (for example, RPEQ in Queensland)
- Site-based work: Engineers working on remote project sites must still meet visa conditions regarding the sponsoring employer and nominated location
