How to get sponsored as a retail manager in Australia

Reviewed 16 September 2026 — thresholds from the Department of Home Affairs price list and salary page; state-list positions as last published by Migration SA and WA Migration.

Which visa can a retail manager be sponsored on?

Retail Manager (General), ANZSCO 142111, sits in an honest middle ground: it is not a walk-up occupation on the national lists the way nurses or electricians are, but real routes exist and retailers use them — especially outside the capitals.

  • 482 Skills in Demand — available only while the occupation appears on the Core Skills Occupation List; check the current CSOL before planning around it, because retail occupations move on and off national lists more than most.
  • 494 Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional — the workhorse for this occupation. A regional retailer (and remember: everything outside Greater Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane is "regional") can sponsor for five years with a 191 permanent pathway after three.
  • DAMA — several regional agreements list retail and shop managers with concessions on salary, age or English that the standard routes do not allow.
  • State nomination (190/491) — not employer sponsorship at all, but the route much of the search traffic is really asking about; see the state-list section below.

Is retail manager on the South Australia or WA state lists?

The questions we see most. The honest answers:

  • South Australia: Retail Manager (142111) has appeared on South Australia's state nomination list in recent program years, usually with conditions — SA work experience, a competitive points score, or English above the minimum. The list resets every program year, so verify the entry on the current Migration SA list before you commit money to a skills assessment.
  • Western Australia: WA has included retail and customer-facing management occupations in its schedules in some program years, typically in the graduate or state-experience streams. Same rule: the current WA Migration list is the only source that counts.

Two important framing points. First, a state list opens the points-tested 190/491 — you still need a positive VETASSESS assessment and a competitive score. Second, if you are not on a state list this year, employer sponsorship (482/494/DAMA) does not depend on the state lists at all.

Occupation, ANZSCO code and assessing authority

ANZSCO 142111 covers store managers of a retail establishment — supermarkets, fashion, hardware, franchises. The assessing authority is VETASSESS. The occupation is qualification-plus-experience assessed: typically an AQF Certificate IV or higher (or equivalent) plus recent, relevant management experience; highly relevant experience can substitute for formal qualifications in some cases — that is where Recognition of Prior Learning becomes relevant for experienced managers without paper.

Assistant managers, department managers and duty managers usually need their duties assessed carefully: the ANZSCO description turns on genuine management responsibility — rosters, budgets, stock control, staffing decisions — not on job titles.

Salary versus the threshold

For the 482, the role must pay at least the Core Skills Income Threshold — A$79,423 from 1 July 2026 — or the annual market salary rate, whichever is higher. Retail management salaries commonly range A$62,000–A$110,000, which means many store-manager roles sit below the CSIT: this single fact rules out more retail 482 nominations than any list issue. The 494 and several DAMAs allow different settings, which is another reason the regional routes dominate for this occupation.

Work experience and English

Plan around: at least two to three years of management-level retail experience (evidenced by payslips, org charts and duties statements, not just titles); English at IELTS 5.0 overall or equivalent for the 482, with higher scores needed for points-tested routes; and a clean, consistent CV — VETASSESS compares your claimed duties against your references closely.

Step by step: retail manager applying from outside Australia

  1. Confirm the current CSOL and state-list positions for 142111 — this decides which of the three routes you plan for.
  2. Get the VETASSESS skills assessment moving: qualification documents, employment references with duties, payslips.
  3. Sit an English test and aim above the minimum.
  4. Publish a free profile on SponsorTalent so regional retailers and franchise groups can find you — and approach regional employers directly; the shortage is outside the capitals.
  5. When an employer engages, a registered migration agent confirms which route (482/494/DAMA) actually fits the role and the salary.

Step by step: retail manager already in Australia

  1. Your Australian retail experience is your biggest asset — SA and WA state streams often favour or require in-state work.
  2. Ask your current employer first: franchisees and regional groups often hold or can obtain sponsorship approval, and a known manager is the easiest sponsorship case they will ever run.
  3. Check your visa's expiry and conditions before anything else; timing drives strategy on every onshore case.
  4. Get the VETASSESS assessment underway early — it is the longest lead-time item.

For employers: how to sponsor a retail manager

Three approvals in sequence: Standard Business Sponsorship for the business, nomination of the role, then the visa. The nomination turns on genuine position evidence (why the store needs a manager at this salary) and on meeting the salary settings for the chosen route. Regional retailers should compare the 494 and any local DAMA before defaulting to the 482 — the concessions are often decisive for store-manager salaries. Listing the role on SponsorTalent is free; candidate contact unlocks cost $30 each.

Frequently asked questions

Can an assistant store manager be sponsored? Sometimes — the assessment looks at actual management duties, not the title. An assistant manager running rosters, budgets and staff may assess as 142111; one mainly serving customers will not.

Does experience without a qualification work? VETASSESS can accept substantial relevant experience in place of formal qualifications in some configurations, and an RPL-obtained Certificate IV in Retail Management can strengthen thin paperwork — see the RPL guide linked below. No outcome is guaranteed.

Is retail manager on the 186 pathway? Direct Entry depends on the occupation's list status at the time; the more common permanent routes for this occupation are 494→191 and state-nominated 190/491.
