How to Find an Employer Sponsor for Your Client
When a skilled client has no employer lined up, the sponsor becomes the bottleneck. This guide sets out how migration agents identify viable 482 and 494 sponsors, use the approved-sponsor register, and open a conversation that leads to a nomination.
What makes an employer a viable sponsor
Before you spend time on an approach, a prospective sponsor generally needs to be able to:
- Hold or obtain sponsorship approval — an existing Standard Business Sponsor has already cleared this hurdle; a first-time sponsor will need to apply.
- Offer a genuine position that matches the client's nominated occupation and its ANZSCO duties.
- Meet the salary requirement — the role must meet the applicable income threshold and market salary rate for the occupation.
- Complete Labour Market Testing where required for the stream.
- Meet ongoing sponsor obligations, including record-keeping and paying the required government charges (which the sponsor, not the worker, must fund).
Research the approved-sponsor register
Employers who already hold Standard Business Sponsorship have demonstrated they can meet their obligations and are far more likely to sponsor again. Researching existing approved sponsors in your client's occupation and region is one of the most efficient ways to build a target list. See our companion guide on how to search Australia's approved sponsor list, and understand what a first-time employer must do on the becoming an approved sponsor page.
Target by industry and region
Sponsorship demand concentrates in sectors with persistent shortages. Match your client's occupation to where employers are actively hiring:
- Healthcare and aged care — nurses, carers, allied health
- Construction and trades — carpenters, electricians, plumbers
- Hospitality — chefs, cooks, venue managers
- Engineering and IT — civil engineers, developers, data specialists
Regional roles may also open the 494 Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional pathway, which carries its own permanent-residency route — worth flagging to employers in regional areas.
Approaching an employer
Employers are more receptive when you reduce their perceived risk. A strong approach:
- Leads with a specific, pre-screened candidate who matches a role the employer actually needs
- Explains the process, timeline and costs plainly, including what the employer must fund
- Positions you as the professional who manages compliance end-to-end, so the employer isn't taking on unfamiliar risk
Use the SponsorTalent sponsor directory
The SponsorTalent sponsor directory lets you search employers who sponsor, filtered by industry and region, so you can build a targeted shortlist in minutes instead of trawling. Registered agents can also post a client requirement on the agent matching board to surface sponsors and candidates from across the network. It's free to browse — you only pay a one-off fee to unlock direct contact details.
