Two things people miss. A centre manager cannot be nominated on a standard 482, only reached through state nomination or the 494. And "group leaders only" on the regional list means the 494 is for educators actually leading a room, not assistants.
The salary gap, explained
Award wages for a Certificate III educator sit in the A$55,000 to A$68,000 range depending on the level and the 2024 and 2025 government-funded increases; diploma educators and room leaders sit higher, and early childhood teachers are paid on teacher scales from roughly A$75,000. The Core Skills Income Threshold for a 482 or 186 is A$79,423 from 1 July 2026, or the market rate if higher. A centre can only nominate at or above that figure, and the Department tests whether the salary is genuine for the role.
In practice that means:
- Certificate III educators are rarely nominated on a standard 482 in the cities. The ads that say "sponsorship available" for them usually mean the centre will consider sponsoring once you are a diploma room leader.
- Diploma-qualified room leaders and educational leaders at larger centres and groups are nominated regularly, often at the threshold.
- Early childhood teachers are the cleanest case: salary clears the bar and the occupation carries every visa.
- Regional centres use the 494 (same threshold, different occupation list) and, in DAMA regions, salary concessions that the standard program does not offer. How DAMAs work.
Qualifications and the ACECQA assessment
Australian centres staff to the National Quality Framework, so your qualification has to map to it: a Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care, a Diploma, or a bachelor-level early childhood teaching degree. ACECQA assesses overseas qualifications for equivalence and is the skills assessing authority for 421111 and 241111. A qualification that ACECQA does not recognise is the second-most-common reason a sponsorship falls over, after salary.
You will also need a state Working With Children Check (or equivalent), a first-aid and anaphylaxis certificate for many roles, and English at IELTS 5.0 across the board for the 482 (higher for the 186 and the points-tested visas). Onshore candidates completing an Australian diploma are the group centres most often sponsor, because the qualification question is already answered.
Which centres sponsor
Sponsorship is concentrated in the large for-profit and not-for-profit groups with Standard Business Sponsorship already in place, in regional and outer-suburban centres with persistent vacancies, and in DAMA regions (the Northern Territory, regional South Australia, Far North Queensland and others list childcare occupations). SponsorTalent’s directory includes 2,955 childcare and aged-care providers from the ACECQA and ACQSC registers alongside the Department’s approved-sponsor list; see the childcare sponsors directory and companies that sponsor.
Steps for a childcare candidate
- Match your qualification to the Australian level honestly: Certificate III, Diploma or teaching degree. If you are a Certificate III educator, plan the diploma; it is what changes the salary conversation.
- Lodge the ACECQA assessment early; without it a centre cannot be sure you count towards its ratios.
- Register a free profile stating your qualification, room-leader experience and whether you are onshore. Centres searching here filter on exactly those three things.
- Look at regional centres and the 494: the permanent 191 follows after three years and the competition is thinner.
- Early childhood teachers should also run the points-tested 189 or 190 in parallel; the occupation is on the MLTSSL.
Frequently asked questions
Can a childcare worker get a 482 visa in Australia? Yes in principle: Child Care Worker (421111) is on the Core Skills Occupation List with the 482 and 186 available. In practice the nomination must pay at least A$79,423, which rules out most Certificate III roles; diploma room leaders, early childhood teachers and regional centres with 494 or DAMA access are where sponsorship actually happens.
What qualification do I need for childcare sponsorship? A qualification that ACECQA recognises as equivalent to an Australian Certificate III or Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care, or an approved early childhood teaching degree. ACECQA is also the skills assessing authority for the visa.
Can a childcare centre manager be sponsored? Not on a standard 482 or 186: Child Care Centre Manager (134111) is on the MLTSSL but not the Core Skills list. The routes are the points-tested 189, 190 and 491, or the regional 494 through a regional employer.
Is childcare on any DAMA? Yes. Several regional agreements, including the Northern Territory and regional South Australia, list childcare occupations with concessions on salary, English or age. The employer must be endorsed by the region first, and you must live and work in the region.
Do childcare centres prefer onshore candidates? Strongly. Students and graduates completing an Australian diploma already have a recognised qualification, a Working With Children Check and local references, and can start immediately. Many centres only consider offshore candidates for early childhood teacher roles.
