Can I sponsor a dental assistant in Australia? Assistant no, hygienist and technician yes

Not the assistant; yes to the clinical and technical roles. Dental Assistant (423211) is a skill level 4 occupation on no skilled list, so a practice cannot nominate chairside assistants for a 482, 186 or 494. Dental Hygienist (411211), Dental Therapist (411214), Dental Prosthetist (411212) and Dental Technician (411213) are on the Core Skills list, as are dentists and dental specialists, so a practice short of hygienists or a laboratory short of technicians has a real sponsorship route. Chairside roles are filled, as everywhere, by students and graduates of the Certificate III and IV in Dental Assisting and other visa holders who need no sponsorship.

Checked against the Department of Home Affairs occupation lists and price list, 1 July 2026 settings. Updated 29 October 2026.

Health nominations are processed with priority under Ministerial Direction 105. For the registered roles the Ahpra process runs alongside the nomination and usually takes longer than the visa; start it first.

Why the assistant cannot be sponsored

The Core Skills list starts, with few exceptions, at skill level 3, and dental assisting sits at level 4. The December 2024 list added oral health roles and left assisting where it was. Nominating an experienced assistant as a Dental Technician or Hygienist is refused: the technician code is laboratory work with a technology qualification, and the hygienist code needs Ahpra registration. The regional DAMAs are the only sponsored route, where one lists the occupation; check your region on sponsor workers in your state.

Who can work chairside now

The roster does not have to wait for a visa. Three groups can work for you today without sponsorship, and dental practices already run on them:

  • International students in nursing, individual support, disability, dental assisting and health administration courses: 48 hours a fortnight in term, unlimited in breaks, and placement students become hires. Employing international students.
  • 485 graduates of those courses, with unrestricted work rights for two years or more and an Australian qualification the regulator recognises.
  • Partner and bridging visa holders and working holiday makers (whose six-month limit per employer does not apply to aged care and disability work anywhere in Australia): full work rights after a VEVO check and the sector’s screening. Who can work for you now.

SponsorTalent lists care candidates by qualification, visa and city, so you can see who can start after screening before you make contact; search is free and a contact unlocks for A$30.

A dental assisting student who completes the Certificate IV and moves on to a Bachelor of Oral Health becomes a hygienist you can sponsor; the practice that supports the study keeps the graduate.

Do not nominate the role under an occupation it is not. A personal care worker nominated as an Enrolled Nurse, a receptionist as an Office Manager or a support worker as a Community Worker is tested against the duties, the qualification, the award classification and the pay, and a mismatch is refused, can bar the provider from sponsoring for years, and exposes the worker to cancellation. If the person genuinely does the listed job and holds its qualification, nominate that job at its rate; if not, use the routes above.
