Can I sponsor a butcher in Australia? Yes, with the right code and assessment

Yes. Butcher or Smallgoods Maker (351211) is on the Core Skills Occupation List, so a butcher shop, supermarket meat department, smallgoods maker or wholesale butcher can nominate a qualified butcher for the 482, the 186 and the regional 494. The requirements are a trade butcher, not a counter hand: a Certificate III in Meat Processing (Retail Butcher) or equivalent overseas training with experience, a Trades Recognition Australia assessment where required, and a salary at or above A$79,423. Abattoirs and meat processors are a different case: slaughterers, boners and slicers are not listed, and the industry sponsors them under the Meat Industry Labour Agreement.

What the nomination needs

  • A qualified butcher: the ANZSCO skill level is 3; a Certificate III in Meat Processing (Retail Butcher) or an overseas apprenticeship or trade certificate with several years of experience. Supermarket meat departments and chains run their own traineeships, whose graduates are already here.
  • Trades Recognition Australia assessment (A$795, typically around 120 days) where the Department’s instrument lists the occupation for the applicant’s passport, and for the 186 Direct Entry regardless. Many employers commission one for every offshore hire.
  • Salary of at least A$79,423 or the market rate, which sits above the Meat Industry Award rates for a retail butcher, so the nominated salary must reflect a skilled tradesperson.
  • Labour market testing: two advertisements of at least 28 days on platforms with national reach within four months of nominating, unless the worker is a UK citizen or another exemption applies.
  • Government charges: sponsorship A$420, nomination A$330 plus the Skilling Australians Fund levy of A$1,200 a year under A$10 million turnover, visa A$4,015 for a 482. Timeline; costs and the decision.

Butchers already here

The floor does not have to wait for a visa. Three groups can work for you today without sponsorship, and retail already runs on them:

  • International students: 48 hours a fortnight in term, unlimited in breaks, which fall over Christmas trading for most courses. Employing international students.
  • Working holiday makers (417 and 462): any role, six months per employer; register with the ATO for the 15 per cent rate. Employing working holiday makers.
  • Partner, graduate (485) and bridging visa holders: full work rights, a VEVO check and nothing else. Who can work for you now.

SponsorTalent lists retail candidates by visa and city, so you can see who can start on Monday before you make contact; search is free and a contact unlocks for A$30.

Working holiday makers from the UK, Ireland and Europe with trade butchery backgrounds, students in meat processing traineeships and 485 graduates are the onshore pool, and the UK butchers are the simplest sponsorship on the site: no labour market testing and no English test for UK citizens (hiring from the UK).

Do not nominate the role under an occupation it is not. A sales assistant nominated as a Retail Manager, a shop supervisor as a Retail Buyer or a counter hand as a Butcher is tested against the duties, the qualification, the size of the business and the pay, and a mismatch is refused, can bar the business from sponsoring for years, and exposes the worker to cancellation. If the person genuinely does the listed job, nominate that job at its rate; if not, use the routes above.

Frequently asked questions

Is butcher on the skilled occupation list? Yes. Butcher or Smallgoods Maker (351211) is on the Core Skills list for the 482, 186 and 494.

Can a supermarket sponsor a butcher? Yes, for a qualified butcher in its meat department, at a salary of at least A$79,423 or the market rate, with a TRA assessment where required and labour market testing.

Can an abattoir sponsor slaughterers and boners? Not on the standard 482, because those occupations are not listed; approved processors sponsor them under the Meat Industry Labour Agreement on the 482 labour-agreement stream.

Does a sponsored butcher need a skills assessment? For the 482, where the Department’s instrument lists the occupation for the applicant’s passport; for the 186 Direct Entry, always. Trades Recognition Australia assesses on the Certificate III or an overseas equivalent plus employment evidence.

Can I sponsor a counter hand or apprentice butcher? No. The occupation is a trade; a counter hand or trainee without the qualification cannot be nominated. Apprentices and trainees already in Australia on student and other visas can work for you now and be nominated when qualified.
