One of the most common questions we get is whether you can change employers while on a 482 visa. The short answer is yes — but it requires a new nomination from your new employer.

The Process

1. Find a new employer willing to sponsor you
2. New employer must be an approved sponsor (or apply to become one)
3. New employer lodges a new nomination for you
4. You apply for a new 482 visa (transfer)
5. You can start working for the new employer once the nomination is approved

Important Timing

• You have 60 days from ceasing employment with your old employer to find a new sponsor and begin the transfer process
• If you don't find a new sponsor within 60 days, you must leave Australia or apply for a different visa
• You can continue working for your new employer while the new visa is being processed (after nomination approval)

Impact on PR Pathway

If you were planning to transition to a 186 TRT visa, changing employers resets the 3-year clock. You need to work for your new employer for 3 years before you can apply for the TRT stream. However, you may be eligible for the Direct Entry stream if you meet the other requirements.
