What Is the 186 Visa?

The Subclass 186 Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) visa is one of the most popular pathways to permanent residency in Australia. It allows skilled workers who are nominated by an Australian employer to live and work permanently in Australia.

Three Streams

Temporary Residence Transition (TRT)

For 482 visa holders who have worked for their employer for at least 3 years. This is the most common pathway — you work on a 482 first, then transition to permanent residency.

Direct Entry

For workers who haven't held a 482 visa, or who haven't completed 3 years with their employer. Requires a skills assessment and at least 3 years of relevant experience.

Labour Agreement

For workers sponsored under a labour agreement between their employer and the Australian Government. Requirements depend on the specific agreement.

Key Requirements

• Under 45 years old (exemptions apply)
• Competent English (IELTS 6.0 each band or equivalent)
• Skills assessment (Direct Entry stream)
• Health and character checks
• Nominated by an approved sponsor for a genuine position

Costs

• Nomination: $540
• Visa application: $4,640 (main applicant)
• SAF levy: $3,000-5,000 (one-off)

Processing Times

TRT stream: 6-12 months. Direct Entry: 6-18 months. Processing times vary significantly based on complexity and completeness of the application.
